A sunny day in May 1949, Jack Wurm, a struggling busboy from San Fransisco, stumbled over a bottle on a beach just outside of town. Inside was a message, short and concise: »To avoid potential misunderstandings, I hereby donate all my assets to the first person who finds this bottle. 20th of June 1937, signed Daisy Alexander.«
Mrs Alexander, who had unfortunately passed away back in 1940, turned out to be the daughter of sewing machine magnate Isaac Singer, with assets in the proximity of 12 million dollars. Jack Wurm has to accept splitting the heritage evenly between himself and Daisy Alexander's lawyer.

September 1914. The 1st World War is raging in Europe. Thomas Hughes, a British soldier on his way to France, tosses a little green bottle, containing a letter addressed to his wife, in the English Channel. Two days later Hughes gets killed in combat.
In 1999, the same little green bottle is dragged up by a fishing boat on River Thames. By this time, the letter's intended recipient has been dead for 20 years, and will sadly never get to read her husband's last declaration of love. Fisherman Steve Gowan instead has the pleasure of personally delivering the slightly delayed letter to the Hughes' 86 year old daughter in New Zealand.

In December 1955, Åke Wiking has had enough. His life as a sailor is demanding, monotonous and lonely, and Åke really longs for a girlfriend. He writes a contact ad, puts it in an empty bottle and throws it in the ocean.
About a year and a half later, Italian fisherman Sebastiano Puzzo discovers Åke's message in a bottle on a Sicilian beach. Sebastiano, who was never taught English, and, regardless of that, never had any interest in blonde Swedish sailors, passes the bottle on to his 18-year old daughter.
In the autumn of 1958 Åke Wiking marries Paolina Puzzo in her native village in Sicily.

In 16th century England, there is never a perfect moment to open a message in a bottle without considering the risk to one's own life. Queen Elizabeth I views messages in a bottle as such a potential threat and dangerous channel of communication that she appoints an »Official Uncorker of Ocean Bottles«, stationed by the castle, with the sole purpose to open all bottles that have been found anywhere in the country. Anyone who ignores the Queen's rules will face a painful death by hanging.
